Charcoal from coconut shell and durability of asphalt pavement (arang tempurung kelapa dan keawetan jalan)

Asphalt binder commonly produced from natural resource is a non-renewable material. Asphalt binder demand continuously increased especially for pavement material. It is necessary to economize asphalt binder by increasing its stability and durability of asphalt pavement. From our literature study, we find that carbon black can be use as one of additives material that could increase stability and durability for asphalt pavement. One of the primary materials to produced carbon black is charcoal from coconut shell, and then called as “ATK”. Our research result shows that by adding ATK in asphalt binder between five to ten percent could increased the stability of asphalt pavement. In contrast, the effects of water to ATK that had been adding in the asphalt binder could decrease the stability and durability of asphalt pavement.
